How painting works
Every real building inside the block gets exactly one outline that follows its roof edge. Anything that isn't a building loses its outline. The green outlines are the computer's first guess; the ones you draw show pink.
Add and Subtract
Every shortcut has a left-hand key and a numpad key, so use whichever hand is free. The painter is always in one of two modes: A or + switches to Add, S or − to Subtract, and the badge on the toolbar says which you're in. The tools are 1–4 on the number row or the numpad. Draw 3 (click corner by corner, click the first point to finish) and Rect 4 both follow the mode:
- Subtract cuts the shape out of every outline it overlaps.
- Add merges the shape into any outline it touches, or makes a new outline if it touches none.
Clean up a ragged edge
This is the move you'll use most. In Subtract, drag a Rect or Draw shape over the rough edge to cut it off. Switch to Add and draw the clean shape back in over the same spot; it merges into the outline. For a missed building, draw it in Add mode.
Rect is two strokes: drag along one roof edge and release, which locks the angle and length, then drag out sideways to set the width. That way it lines up with the roof, not the screen.
Remove outlines
Click 1 an outline to remove it. Lasso 2 in Subtract removes every outline you circle. Removed outlines vanish from the map; to bring one back, press Ctrl+Z or circle the spot with Lasso in Add.
No roofs?
Some blocks have no roofs that could hold solar: open land, or only trailers, carports and open sheds. Remove every outline and the button changes to ✓ Submit — no roofs. That counts as a finished block.
Getting around
Hold Space and drag to pan, or drag with the middle or right mouse button. B switches to the blended aerial view and back; O goes straight to the plain drone photo. Ctrl+Z undoes; Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y redoes. Esc cancels a shape you're halfway through drawing. ? in the painter shows every shortcut.
Finishing
Work saves itself as you go. When every roof is right, press ✓ Submit for review. To stop partway, press ← Blocks and come back to it; the claim lasts while the painter is open and lapses after 15 minutes away.
